Hog-Wild Over PermaCrete
They've gone hog-wild over PermaCrete in Iowa. It seems feed was spilling out of the hog feeders and landing on the concrete base around the feeders. And being hogs, the critters were eating the spilled feed ...and the concrete. Whether eating the concrete adversely affected the hogs is not known, but it sure was expensive having to replace the concrete slats and slabs.
Sue Crawford, president of Decorative Concrete Solutions, Inc., in Merrill, Iowa, heard about one farmer's hog feeder dilemma, and, living up to her corporate name, she had the perfect solution. Last December, Sue used PermaCrete to resurface the concrete slats and slabs adjacent to each feeder (left photo). It's now been over five months and the results are just as good as Sue predicted.
"The PermaCrete shows absolutely no signs of wear," Sue stated. "The PermaCrete looks exactly the same way it did when we put it down. The owner says the feeding areas are easier to clean now and even safer than regular concrete for the hogs to walk on."
Sue explained that these were not some cute little piglets in a Disney cartoon. No, these are the real thing - adult hogs weighing over 250 pounds walking around on four sharp hooves, right on top of the PermaCrete. She assured us the farm owner, Darrell Schroeder of LeMars, is very pleased. Shown in the photo on the left with his grandson, Ryan, the Schroeder's, father and son Tony, are two of the leading pork producers in Northwest Iowa.
Other hog farmers in the area are now becoming interested in PermaCrete for their feeding areas, and a whole new market has been developed, thanks to Sue Crawford and her faith in PermaCrete's fine products. Now those little piggies can go to market without eating concrete...and Sue can go to the bank.
