Epoxy Reminder

An inherent characteristic of all epoxy installations is that they yellow over a period of time, whether using colored epoxy or clear epoxy. However, pigmented or "colored" epoxy doesn’t show yellowing nearly as much as clear epoxy, because the pigments tend to hide the yellowing and the surface appears to be slowly aging. Also, frequent or periodic surface cleaning with strong chemicals can actually slow the yellowing process to some degree.

Clear epoxy, however, is a different matter. Because it is clear, any yellowing is readily noticed (sometimes within the first 12 months), especially if the clear epoxy has been applied over a light–colored surface such as a white tile bathroom floor or white Formica countertop. Unfortunately, the yellowing process cannot be stopped and will only get worse as time passes.

Importantly, excessive build–up during any epoxy installation can compound and accelerate the yellowing process for both clear and pigmented epoxy applications, as well as cause noticeable streaking in all colored epoxies. Specific care should be taken during each installation to ensure that the total thickness applied does not exceed 15 mils.
